Bail was refused for a 58-year-old man charged with shooting a woman in Bryndwr last week, when he applied to be released from custody at the Christchurch District Court today.

Stephen Bruce Angus has indicated he will be defending the charge of wounding the woman with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Judge Paul Kellar heard the bail application by duty lawyer Andrew McKenzie, but declined bail and remanded Angus in custody to February 12, when he will appear by video-link from the prison.

Angus also faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Police said today they were also likely to charge him for possession of the weapon in breach of a protection order.

The incident in which the woman was shot in the leg took place on Wednesday, outside Angus’ home, and police found and arrested him on Friday, after his photograph had been released to the media.

He appeared in court on Saturday and was remanded in custody to today for his bail application to be heard.
