“God” is allowed to go home. Judge Moses said so.
The 37-year-old man has consistently claimed to be God since he was arrested for unlawfully taking a car, stealing petrol, stealing alcohol, and assaulting a police officer.
He’s been held in custody for rather more than 40 days and 40 nights – since July in fact.
He has treated that as something of an affront, telling judges that locking up God was treason.
Today was meant to be his Day of Judgment, when he would have a trial, but it wasn’t ready to go ahead.
Judge Jonathan Moses, who normally sits in Manukau, granted the police the adjournment they wanted.
But he was worried that the man had been in custody so long, so he put it on hold while an address in Cashmere was sorted out.
Once that was arranged, he released the man on bail for two judge-alone trials set for next year.
“God” asked if he could start by getting a lift back to the prison, because his paperwork and his shoes – possibly sandals? – were still there.
