Two men have been remanded in custody on charges of arson after a car was allegedly set alight in the red zone in Burwood early on Monday.
The men appeared before Judge Raoul Neave in the Christchurch District Court and were remanded to appear again on November 20, by video-link from Christchurch Men’s Prison.
Firefighters were called to the car on fire on Brooker Avenue, Burwood, about 1.25am on Monday.
A car leaving the scene allegedly failed to stop for police and two occupants were arrested after it went up the driveway of a house in Bournemouth Crescent, about 2km away.
Brayden Clemett, 23, a resident of Bournemouth Crescent, has been charged with failing to stop for the police – a charge in its aggravated form because the police say he has done it at least twice before.
He is also charged with dangerous driving on New Brighton Road, and intentionally damaging the car by fire.
Tyler Keith Smith, 22, of Northcote, has been jointly charged with intentionally damaging the car by fire.
No pleas have been entered.
