A 60-year-old North Canterbury man charged with sex offending against six women or girls – including stupefying three of them – has been remanded on bail at the Christchurch District Court.
The man made a first appearance before Judge Alistair Garland after his arrest on Thursday for offending dating back as far as 1976.
Several of the charges are representative, indicating that the offence is alleged to have occurred more than once.
The judge granted interim name suppression.
The man faces 13 charges including rape, sexual violation with his fingers and by oral sex, and indecent assault, as well as the stupefying charges.
In each stupefying case, the police are alleging sex offending against the same victims.
One indecent assault charge indicates that the alleged victim was aged under 12.
Judge Garland remanded the man on bail to August 24.
