A defiant love song from the dock in Christchurch’s main court landed the 33-year-old singer in custody.
The man, whose record would show he is perfectly familiar with court rooms, was called before Judge Stephen O’Driscoll in the No 1 District Court this morning.
He faced charges of drink-driving, dangerous driving causing injury, and breach of prison release conditions.
While counsel Paul Johnson was talking about what should happen with the remand, the man spotted his girlfriend sitting in the public seats.
He began signalling to her and trying to talk to her.
Judge O’Driscoll told him to stop that. He was there to do court business not “flirt with your girlfriend”, the judge told him.
That prompted an immediate rendition from the dock of a Frank Sinatra classic.
“I love you baby, and if it’s quite alright,” he crooned. “I need you baby, to warm the lonely nights…”
That was the point where Judge O’Driscoll remanded him in custody.
The song could be heard continuing as he was led out of the court and down the corridor to the holding cells.
“I’m very sorry about that,” said Mr Johnson.
“It’s not your fault, Mr Johnson,” said Judge O’Driscoll. “He’s just a bad singer.”
