A man charged with carjacking two tourists in Christchurch early on Monday has been granted a registrar’s remand at the Christchurch District Court.

Rahiri Tai, 17, of Flaxton in North Canterbury, is charged with robbing the man and woman of a vehicle in an incident that the police say took place soon after midnight on Monday.

Tai is also charged with driving while disqualified on Riccarton Road, and dangerous driving on the Main South Road.

Police allege that only a few minutes after the car was taken, it was crashed at the Sockburn round-about.

Police said the driver was injured and taken to Christchurch Hospital where he remained under guard until he could be interviewed.

He was later released on police bail from the hospital with a court appearance arranged for today.

Tai did not need to appear in court before a judge and was granted a registrar’s remand, on bail, to appear again on February 3.

He has entered no pleas to the three charges.
