Bail was refused for a 24-year-old man charged with the armed robbery of a secondhand bookshop in Edgeware yesterday.

Police allege Jamie Allan Hewison was armed with a paring knife when he robbed the woman at the shop about 4pm.

Defence counsel Kiran Paima applied for bail for Hewison, who is unemployed and lives a few blocks from the Edgeware Paperback Centre, when he appeared before Judge Emma Smith in the Christchurch District Court today.

However, Judge Smith declined the bail application and remanded Hewison in custody to appear by video-link from the prison on January 26, when he is expected to enter a plea.

Police alleged Hewison left the shop with $42 cash. He was chased by a passerby who caught up with him and made him drop the cash. Police caught up with the alleged robber soon after that.
